BARA & Youth Charter

In the last 10 years the Youth Charter has been helping tackle many of the serious issues facing our young people today by providing them with innovative programmes aiming to use their energy and develop their talents through sport and other initiatives while promoting social inclusion and good citizenship, including the Rugby Wise tool kit. This is exactly what BARA is about – we promote rugby as a tool for social and personal development, offering support, opportunities and strong sporting role models for the UK’s South Asian communities – and Geoff with his experience and encouragement has helped guide us in various ways, right from our beginnings with the South Asia Bulls.

Geoff Thompson MBE

Geoff Thompson MBE is the five times former World Karate Champion. As founder and Executive Chairman of the Youth Charter for Sport, Culture & Arts, established in 1993, he has campaigned hard on the role of sport as vehicle of social change. He also advises private and public sector organisation, both nationally and internationally, on sport, social inclusion and regeneration issues.

About Youth Charter

Over the past decade, The Youth Charter has been at the forefront of innovative social and human development inclusion and regeneration projects and programmes locally, nationally and internationally. A UK based charity and international NGO, The Youth Charter has a specific aim of "providing young people with an opportunity to develop in life through sport, culture and the arts"

Established as part of the Manchester Olympic and Commonwealth Games bids, the Youth Charter aims specifically to tackle low educational attainment, anti social behaviour, youth crime and drug abuse.

The Youth Charter applies the ethics of sporting and artistic excellence through its projects and programmes to which young people can relate, namely discipline, fair play, teamwork and healthy competition. Wider social benefits are realised depending on each community’s existing social wealth. The overall aim is to provide inclusive pathways to positive citizenship, rights, responsibilities, lifelong learning, vocational opportunities, capacity building and improved quality of life through the Youth Charter approach.

Geoff Thompson MBE, former World Heavyweight karate Champion, who is now chair of the Youth Charter based in Manchester which has provided invaluable support to the BARA, saluted the organization as “a pioneering, unique and ground-breaking initiative”.
