| The rugby
world is looking at ways of increasing the
growth of rugby and one of the ways the
British Asian Rugby Association (BARA) wants
to contribute is by encouraging and supporting
more people from the South Asian communities
living in the UK & Ireland and abroad,
to be given the opportunities at all levels.
Although rugby governing bodies, professional
and amateur clubs have been striving to
attain multi cultural diversity within the
game, they have had limited success in tapping
into the untapped potential within the South
Asian communities. BARA was created to attempt
to redress the balance, working alongside
rugby bodies and other relevant organisations.
BARA’s principle aims
are to provide positive role models, break
down cultural & religious barriers,
promote community integration, personal
development, healthy living and encouraging
participation in sport & physical activity
especially in rugby.
BARA
was launched in the City of Bradford, September
2004, under the auspices of the Bradford
Council’s Sport & Leisure Service,
the Youth Charter, the Rugby Football Union,
the Rugby Football League & Sport England.

BARA was praised recently by Prime Minister Gordon Brown during PM Question Time and has been officially endorsed for its work by Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe MP. |
