The British Asian Rugby Association To Take Part In The Pocklington 7-A-Side Competition
13/04/2006
For the third year in a row the British Asian Rugby Association (BARA), have been invited to participate in Yorkshire’s rugby's oldest seven-a-side tournament, the Good Friday Guinness Pock 7s. The event gets underway next week with a full entry of 24 teams, which includes nine former winners in a competitive mix of local clubs and out of county touring and invitation teams
The event has been staged at Pocklington every Good Friday since 1959, and drew a crowd of 3,000 rugby enthusiasts in 2005. It is well established as one of East Yorkshire's biggest sporting and social rugby days out, with many exiles from the area making their way back home for an annual Easter reunion, some flying back from abroad just for the day. The day has a new sponsor for 2006, brewers Guinness, who helped arrange the draw at half-time during a recent Guinness Premiership game at Leeds.

BARA has selected a very competitive squad of players and is boosted by the appearance from Nasser Hussain, the captain of the Indian Rugby Football Union team.
Ikram Butt, BARA Director ‘‘We are honoured and delighted to be invited once again to take part in such a prestigious event. The pock 7s is an event we always enjoy and look forward to.’’
Officials, players and spectators will also be treated to a rare view of the replica of the Calcutta Cup on display at the event which was won by BARA during their participation in the All India & South Asian Championships in Mumbai, India last October.
The action gets underway at 1.00 pm with an encounter between Goole and Brookfield, and more than six hours of non-stop, high speed rugby follows, with the final scheduled for 6.40 pm.
