GROUND–BREAKING BARA Director Honoured In Education Resource Book

Ikram Butt, the first Asian player to be selected for England Rugby League, has been included among 15 Black and Asian people ho are featured in a brand new education book entitled: ‘Did You Know’ that was launched at the House of Lords.
The 38 page book published by Huddersfield-based company Primary Colours is intended to inform children about the significant achievements and contributions to British Society made by the Asian and black communities.
Ikram who works for the Bradford Sport & Leisure Service, played as a professional player with
Leeds, Featherstone, London Broncos – the predecessors to Harlequins RL, Hunslet and
Huddersfield. He was selected to play for
England during the 1995 European Championships. Ikram has also represented
Pakistan at Rugby Union.
In the book which retails at £8.95, Ikram is one of two Asian and Black sports persons featured and they are given a place alongside such people as the first Asian member of the House of Lords, Lord Nazir f Rotherham:; Dadabhai Naoroji, who was Britain’s first Asian MP and Olaudah Equiano, a former slave who bought his freedom and subsequently went on to champion people’s rights.
Richard Lewis, the RFL’s Executive Chairman, said “It is a privilege for Rugby League to have one of its players featured in such an important publication.

Ikram Butt has become a role model not just for Rugby League players but also for his community. We are proud that he has been recognised, along with other outstanding members of the Asian and Black Communities, for their contributions to
Britain’s cultural, political, scientific and sporting life.”
