Introduction | History & Origin | Centres | Clubs | Contacts

Introduction

A committee comprising of senior members of Clubs from the 2 major centers viz. Calcutta & Bombay foresaw the affairs of Indian Rugby Football since its inception in India. After its growth to other centers around India, it was decided to formally incorporate a body for the growth & governance of the game. Thus IRFU was incorporated in 1998. It is now a member of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), The Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) and The International Rugby Board (IRB).

The first official Indian National Team was formed in 1998. Since then India has participated in several International Tournaments in both formats of the game.

Season

Traditionally, owing to availability and softer conditions of the ground, 15-a-side Rugby in India is played during the monsoon months i.e. June to September. Though, with the growing popularity of 7’s Rugby, 7-a-side tournaments are conducted at minor venues year round.
