Introduction

The Pakistan Rugby Union was formally established in 2000 and gained membership with the Asian Rugby Football Union in 2001. In 2003 Pakistan fielded a national team for the first time, participating in the Provincial Tournament in Sri Lanka, playing India. In 2004, try-outs for the national team have just been concluded and intensive training camps are underway for participation in the 19th Asian Rugby Football Tournament being held in Hong Kong in October.

Moreover, a national under-19’s side is also being put together for the first time and trained to participate in a tournament in Kung Min, China, in December.

On the local scene, the clubs, particularly in Lahore and Islamabad, are seeing an expanding membership base and the development of solid squads. Moreover, the clubs are committed to expanding the game, particularly to the youth and educational institutions in the country. Islamabad has taken the lead in this regard and is working with ten schools, whilst Lahore is doing the same with two premier schools. All of this has really set the stage for further expansion and greater efforts to capture the imagination of the sporting public. The future bodes well for the sport in the country, which is backed up by a rich heritage and unlimited potential.
