Hawarun Wins Gold For Bradford

Bradford’s Deputy Lord Mayor, Hawarun Hussain won the Northern Future Leaders Award, sponsored by Leeds Metropolitan University, at the Lloyds TSB Asian Jewel Awards, held at the New Century Hall, Manchester in April 2009.

The Awards, now in their seventh year, celebrate corporate, commercial and professional excellence. The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has described them as ‘the biggest gathering of A-list Asian entrepreneurs, and professionals in Britain’.

‘I am proud to be the Prime Minister of a multicultural Britain. I strongly believe that Britain’s diversity and experiences have brought tremendous strengths and benefits to our society. The Asian Jewel Awards are an important and unique initiative and play a very significant role in helping appreciate and celebrate this diversity’.

Khalid Darr, Chairman of Carter Anderson & Chair of the Asian Jewel Awards added, ‘The Asian Jewel Awards are, without doubt, the biggest celebration of Asian success and achievement ever seen in Britain. A celebration which concentrates on the positive, on the way that Asian people have successfully integrated into British society and are now making a highly valuable contribution to the social and economic fabric of this country’.

‘Over the past year I have been most struck by the achievements and success stories prevalent within our community and I am proud to be able to chronicle some key parts of what has been done. Here is an eclectic presentation of the best of Asian success and integration, a profile of a community that is proud of its commitment to the central values of its traditions of hard work, self-reliance, and community service’.

BARA Managing Director, Ikram Butt, one of the members of the panel of judges at the Jewel Awards added, ‘Hawarun is a wonderful Ambassador for the City of Bradford and is committed to making a difference. To be the first Asian Deputy Lord Mayor is truly outstanding and she thoroughly deserves this Award’.
